• Round face: an angled or longer bob that falls below the chin adds length; avoid very rounded, chin-length shapes.
• Oval or long face: almost any bob works; a chin-length cut with bangs shortens a long face.
• Square jaw: soft, layered ends and a side part round off the corners better than a blunt line at the jaw.
• Fine hair: a blunt, one-length bob keeps weight at the ends and looks thicker.
• Thick or wavy hair: a layered or graduated bob removes bulk and sits better day to day.

The fastest test is visual: run two or three bob shapes through the bob filter on the same photo and the right length usually becomes obvious.

The bob filter is very good at answering the big question — does short hair suit my face? — and at comparing shapes: blunt against rounded, chin length against collarbone length, with or without bangs. It is less reliable on the things that depend on your real hair. A bob on very thick hair can sit wider than the preview; fine, straight hair may need more styling to look as full; natural curls shrink when they are cut short.
